UK to Strengthen Trade and Investment Ties with Kazakhstan and Explore New Opportunities

ASTANA – Minister of State for Trade Policy, the UK Department for International Trade, George Hollingbery paid an official visit on 8 October to Kazakhstan to co-chair the 5th UK-Kazakhstan Intergovernmental commission (IGC) along with Minister of Investment and Development of Kazakhstan, Zhenis Kassymbek.

IGC is an annual event to discuss trade and economic co-operation between the two countries. The event covers co-operation in such priority sectors of bilateral co-operation as O&G, Mining and Financial Services as well as gives an opportunity to explore co-operation in new areas – this year it will also cover Agriculture, Water Infrastructure, Renewables and Waste Management.


“The UK and Kazakhstan have developed co-operation in many areas, including oil and gas, mining and metals, financial and professional business services, civil aviation, digital technologies, education. This meeting gives us an excellent opportunity to strengthen our trade and investment ties, promote the UK as the partner of choice for business and explore new opportunities for collaboration” the Minister said.

The IGC includes both Government and business representatives from the UK and Kazakhstan, and has become and an effective platform to promote and develop bilateral commercial ties. Now over 500 companies with British participation operate in Kazakhstan in the following areas: O&G, Mining, Financial and related Professional services, design and architecture, etc.Kazakhstan already benefits from UK companies offering cutting-edge technologies, whilst the UK government pledges to facilitate further technology business collaboration.

“As a longstanding trading partner of Kazakhstan, UK businesses can offer unrivalled expertise and innovation in a vast range of sectors – which can support our Kazakh partners,” Minister Hollingbery mentioned.

During his visit in Astana the Minister met his Kazakh counterparts and key partners – senior Kazakh government officials and representatives of both Kazakh and British businesses (British Chamber of Commerce in Kazakhstan).
